Endodontics Q & A

What is endodontics?

Endodontists are dentists that specialize in saving your teeth when they’re damaged or diseased. Both your anterior and posterior teeth are made of pulp, dentin, and enamel, and they’re held in your mouth by cementum. The pulp is the innermost part of your tooth, and it contains nerves and connective tissue.

Dentin and enamel are the hard materials that protect your teeth, but sometimes teeth suffer damage deeper inside. Endodontics is the dental specialty that focuses on treating the pulp inside your teeth. Endodontic treatments include root canals, endodontic surgery, and other procedures that can help save your teeth after damage or injury.

What causes tooth pain?

Tooth pain comes in many forms. It’s often a sign that your tooth has been compromised and needs dental attention. Damage like chips and cracks can create holes in the enamel of your teeth, exposing the dentin or pulp below the surface.

Tooth pain can range from mild to severe, and it’s important to have your teeth examined if you notice:

  • Pain when biting
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Swelling in gums or face
  • Tenderness in your jaw

Anterior teeth, or the teeth at the front of your mouth, are susceptible to injury and decay that can lead to tooth pain. Posterior teeth are the molars at the back of your mouth, and they are often more likely to suffer decay because their location makes them more difficult to clean.

Why might I need a root canal?

A root canal is an endodontic procedure that cleans out and replaces infected tooth pulp. Root canals address the diseased tissue while saving the rest of your tooth. If your affected tooth is dark or discolored, a root canal may even help it return to its lighter shade.

The pulp inside a tooth can get infected and put your whole tooth at risk, but a root canal is a routine procedure that prevents further damage. You might need a root canal if you’ve suffered:

  • Deep decay on a tooth
  • A cracked or chipped tooth
  • Repeated dental procedures
  • An injury to the tooth

Root canals are an effective endodontic procedure that helps keep your mouth healthy and your smile bright. Call Sacred Dental & Associates, PC, to learn more about root canals and oral health.
