Oral Surgery Q & A

When do I need oral surgery?

Some dental conditions require surgical intervention. While procedures like braces, veneers, and routine cleanings typically don’t require anesthesia, oral surgery is more invasive. Oral surgery ranges from tooth extractions to jaw restructuring.

If you’re experiencing severe tooth pain or your teeth or jaw aren’t working like they should, you may need oral surgery. Both routine and surgical extractions are common procedures at Sacred Dental & Associates, PC, and they can make a big difference for your health.

Routine extractions remove visible teeth. You may need a routine extraction if you have a severely decayed or damaged tooth. Sometimes patients need surgical extractions when the tooth that needs to be removed hasn’t emerged through the gums yet. Surgical extractions are common for wisdom tooth removal procedures.

What are wisdom tooth extractions?

Wisdom teeth are the molars at the far back of your mouth. Most people have four, one on each side at the top and bottom. Wisdom teeth usually come in when you’re in your teens or early 20s.

Many people need to have their wisdom teeth removed because they don’t come in correctly or there isn’t enough room in their mouths for the extra teeth. Wisdom teeth can become impacted, in which they partially erupt from your gums, or they can crowd your other teeth and cause them to shift.

Wisdom tooth extractions are a common oral surgery that Dr. Nwizu recommends to patients if their wisdom teeth cause problems or pain. Using general anesthesia, Dr. Nwizu makes an incision in your gums and extracts the wisdom teeth. Wisdom tooth extractions prevent complications that can often result from impacted or crowded teeth.

What is alveoplasty?

Alveoplasty is an oral surgery procedure that smooths and reshapes the jawbone. It’s often performed at the same time as tooth extractions, but it’s sometimes recommended even if a patient has gone a long time with a missing tooth.

Missing teeth can leave your jawbone with high and low points that make fitting dentures or other restorative dentistry difficult. If you’ve had a missing tooth for a long time, you may have suffered bone loss. Alveoplasty smooths out the surface of your jawbone.

Alveoplasty, along with tooth extractions, can help speed the healing process and prepare your mouth for the restorative dental procedures you’ll need later. Alveoplasty is typically done with local anesthesia in the Sacred Dental & Associates, PC, office.

Oral surgery is often a necessary element of proper oral health. Whether you need your wisdom teeth taken out or something more specialized, Dr. Nwizu and the team at Sacred Dental & Associates, PC, can help. Call the office to schedule an initial consultation today.
